Tips to Avoid Dry Skin

Keep Skin Hydrated Through Winter

tips_to_avoid_dry_skin
Bright winter days and crisp winter nights come alongside seasonal favorites like cozy sweaters, knit scarves, and leather gloves. The downside to this winter wonderland is the dryness that can be found both in the air and on our skin. Extreme cold, wind, and an abundance of dry indoor heat can wreak havoc on the skin, but only if you don’t know how to prepare for them. Want to enjoy a winter with fabulous skin? Just keep reading.

One of the first areas to lose moisture is the lips. To prevent the dreaded cracking and peeling that can ruin an otherwise perfect pout, make sure lips are constantly coated in a moisturizing lipstick or gloss, and refrain from licking them throughout the day. Believe it or not, petroleum jelly can work wonders on chapped lips. Slather a layer of Vaseline on before bed to wake up with soft, kissable lips.

To prevent winter flaking and peeling, it is important to cleanse and exfoliate regularly. As always, opt for a blend tailored for your particular skin type, for maximum results.

Increased moisture in the skin is vital to compensating for the lack of moisture in the air. During the colder months, it’s a good idea to switch to a thicker, richer cream for both day and night. Choose lotions that are specifically designed to hydrate and refresh the skin—try finding a scent that is reminiscent of the season, like cinnamon spice or gingerbread. Supplement lotion with a weekly hydrating mask, which can work wonders on dry, dull skin.

This winter, don’t just hide under long sleeves and coats. Use these tips to make irritated skin a thing of the past.

I have sensitive skin and during the winter I always get dry hands and lips. I like the tip about putting Vaseline on before going to bed , I think it's definitely working for me. This comment has been removed.

@vamp1967, I'm ALL about the Oil of Olay - morning and night. I slather it on and let it soak in and sometimes put on another thin layer. I need a good daily lip balm. I coat the Vaseline on at night, but I need something to keep my lips moisturized during the day. Suggestions? This comment has been removed.

Great tips! I live in Denver and it's sooo dry here! Aquaphor is great for hands and feet before bed! Also, try to moisturize skin while still damp from shower. I use a heavier face moisturizer in winter too. This comment has been removed.
