How to Get a Perfect Golden Tan

Summer Self Tanning 101
Fair skin is gorgeous, but there's something luxuriant about looking like a beach bunny for summer. We all know baking in the sun is bad, which makes the invention of self-tanning lotion the best thing since high heels. Herein, a crash course in summer self tanning 101.

For an authentic-looking glow, opt for a gradual self-tanner made for daily use. These products contain moisturizing lotion, but still tend to cling to skin’s dry, rough patches, so apply them after shaving and exfoliating. And steer clear of sugar or salt scrubs, which can leave behind residue that prevents an even application.

Applying self-tanner for a naturally sun-kissed effect takes skill and patience. For best results, apply the sunless tanning lotion one hour before bed, starting at the ankles and working upward (always wear latex gloves to prevent stained palms, and wash them thoroughly after application).

Use a makeup sponge or cotton ball to blend it onto the back of your hands and top of your feet, and rub Vaseline over knuckles, ankles and eyebrows prone to color-cling. Slip into loose-fitting pajamas that are long sleeved to prevent your sheets from smelling like your self-tanner.

If streaks, splotches or orange-stained palms result, exfoliate the area and douse a cotton ball with a strong astringent, such as Sea Breeze, and use the cotton to rub away self-tanner mistakes. Some people recommend using a nail polish remover, which is far more potent, but also damaging and drying to sensitive skin. Not to mention the fact that it's pretty stinky. --Stephanie Simons
