Tips and Tricks to Make Pores Appear Smaller

Typically unseen to the naked eye, pores act as an entry and exit point between your body and various elements in the environment. While pores are crucial to optimal skin health, it is only when they are enlarged that they attract our attention.

First and foremost, it’s important to understand what causes enlarged pores. Those with oily skin are prone to having more prominently visible pores. The natural aging process can also contribute to the size of your pores. Oil and buildup causes pores to swell, while increased exposure to the harsh effects of the sun reduces skin elasticity, and prevents pores from staying tightly closed.

Luckily, there are ways to minimize the appearance of pores. Try these tips to get enviably smooth skin.

Tip 1: Keep the skin well-cleansed

Engaging in a thorough, daily skin cleansing regimen—complete with exfoliation—helps to remove skin impurities and other “gunk,” which clog pores and maximizes their appearance. Cleaner skin will ultimately yield smaller looking pores.

Tip 2: Try a skin tightening treatment

Post cleansing, a skin tightening mask or serum can go a long way toward making pores look smaller. Whip up an easy pore-minimizing mask at home by combining one egg white with a teaspoon of honey. Apply the mixture to the face and leave it on for ten to fifteen minutes before rinsing off with warm water. Skin will be noticeably tighter and brighter. Most importantly, pore size will also appear decreased.

Tip 3: Opt for a foundation primer

When nothing else works, try using a foundation primer to smooth out the skin and minimize the appearance of pores. Designed to fill in wrinkles and gaps, a foundation primer not only minimizes pore appearance, it also helps prep the skin for a flawless makeup application.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem. I do try to exfoliate, but am thinking a facial is in order. This comment has been removed.

Great article! I've noticed my pores seem larger around my nose now that I'm in my 40's, ugh!! I do microdermabrasion to keep skin exfoliated. I also use a topical Retin-A. Primer before foundation really helps and also good facials when I get a chance! This comment has been removed.
