3 Nail Polish Basics to Get You Started

So many nail polishes, so little time! I have a separate box that holds all my nail polishes. It’s no surprise that my color trend of choice includes darker colors like navy, black and crimson since my favorite color (and most of my wardrobe) is black. But in the mix, I have a hot pink, mint green, gold, and several neutral shades as well. It’s good to have a variety to fit your nail polish to whatever mood you're in, whatever season it is, or if you're basing the shade on a specific event.

I’m sure by now you’ve all planned out what colors you like and what looks good with your skin tone and wardrobe, but the beauty about nail polishes is that they are easy to experiment with, are typically inexpensive, and look good no matter how you wear them. If you're starting from scratch or resupplying your nail polish collection, I suggest these three basics to get things started right.

Neutrals - Obviously, these colors are good to use anytime. From pale pinks to taupes to off whites, these shades instantly gives your nails a classy look. Neutrals are your best bet when heading to a job interview, if you’re a member of a wedding party, or any formal affair. A french manicure is a polished look, and slightly rounded nails for a DIY manicure look elegant.

Pastels and Neons - When going for big pops of color, whether it’s bright pink or a baby blue, this is a trend better suited for the weekend. However, depending on your work’s dress code, pastel or neon colors can give you a color boost through the work week. Just make sure your nails aren’t clashing with your outfit. Neon orange nails can be a cool trend, but may not look as good if you’re wearing red or pink.

Dark, Edgy Colors - Russian Navy by OPI is one of my favorite nail polish colors. It’s a dark navy, almost black color that looks chic and classic at the same time. Vampy, reddish blacks, wine colors, deep purples, and forest greens are also great choices for fall and can make a fashion statement all on their own. Keep nails short with a squared off tip for an edgy look.

The options you have with nail polish obviously don’t stop with just these three basics alone. Metallics are great to have on hand (no pun intended), nail pens, nail brushes for cool designs, and nail stickers are also ways to address your specific style. But if you’re building up your nail polish base, these three basics will help get you started.
