I'm a huge fan of “Mad Men” on AMC and the beautiful retro makeup worn by the actresses on the show. In general, pin-up style makeup from the '40s, '50s and '60s has always fascinated me. I tend to practice the retro technique a lot on my friends and family whenever I do their makeup. It's so much fun to see a naked face transform into a sultry Marilyn Monroe or Betty Page lookalike! :D
Anyway, I love how this classic makeup trend makes a comeback every few years. Lately, I think Katy Perry and Dita Von Teese have pioneered it in the celebrity world, and they pull it off well.
A good pin-up makeup look is all about the drama, with a huge focus on the eyes and lips. Usually, you want to go with black winged eyeliner on the lids for that cat eye effect and a bright red lipstick. Whenever I create a retro makeup look, I also add brightening eyeshadow in a gold tone, highlighter and concealer so the eyes look wide open. A little deep red blush ties the retro look together.
Of course, dark hair, bright red nails and flawless skin helps too!
Retro makeup makes a really bold statement and looks good on just about everyone, so don't be afraid to try it. It's a fun change for a night out with the girls or for a holiday party.
I think Marilyn Monroe would be proud of our efforts to make this old trend new again! :)
