Lip Color Trend: Don't Be Afraid of the Dark

Dark Lip Colors Make a Bold Statement

I was watching Kourtney and Kim Take Miami (it’s true, I love reality tv!) and I noticed Khloe was rocking a dark lip. At first I thought it was a bit too goth for her pale skin, but after awhile, I thought -- hey, I really like this! It’s such a great standout makeup trend among the nudes we are seeing now and the pinks and peaches we are bound to see come spring.

Dark lip colors like deep burgundy, dark purple, and wine reds can be really pretty if done in the right fashion. If you are not intending to go for a goth look necessarily, but want to try a dark color, I think one of the key things is to keep the rest of the makeup looking more natural.

You don’t want a heavy lip and then a heavy eye, heavy blush, etc. You want the lip color to be the statement of the look and not competing with everything else on your face. Simplicity is best with a tinted moisturizer, naturally flushed cheeks, and maybe just a hint of a dramatic eyeliner.

Also, with dark lip color it’s easy to see flaws. You will want to make sure lips are well-moisturized and flake-free before applying color. To get a fully saturated look, a lip liner is also a good idea, but make sure to blend!

I think a dark lip can look strong and confident while also intriguing and a bit mysterious. Who knew lipstick could say so much!

What do you think of the dark lip look? Too much or truly trendy?

@hkec Try a stain first, but this dark lip will contrast against your lighter complexion and look phenom!! This comment has been removed.

@hkec I think you could totally make it work for you depending on what other makeup you used. Kind of like Khloe in the 3rd picture. Still keep makeup minimal but not completely bare. This comment has been removed.
