Before you even take step into a makeup store, it is important that you know what you like. You wouldn’t go into a hair salon without a picture or at least a description of your new haircut, would you? Probably not. The same idea applies to a makeup application, especially before a big event. Therefore, it’s important to do a little bit of research. Look at magazines or search different pictures online. When you find a style that you like, pay special attention to the model’s eyes in the picture. Are they shaped like yours? If not, then you may have to adjust the look to your eye shape. You can either practice at home, or you can bring the picture to a makeup artist at a department store, Sephora or a salon. Otherwise, if you’re on a budget, YouTube is a great makeup resource for tutorials.
Step 1: What is your style?
The most popular styles are smoky eye, retro eyeliner, natural, special occasion and bronze. Also, take note to how much makeup the model is actually wearing. Often, new clients will request a dark dramatic look, but they don’t realize how much makeup is required for the look. Take note that natural looks can also be scaled up to make your eyes pop and that you don’t always need to wear black to get noticed.
Step 2: Do you prefer matte or shimmer?
This is an important question to know the answer to when you purchase your eye colors. Matte will have a flat, velvety finish while shimmer will most likely contain glitter or have a metallic finish.
Step 3: What is your eye color?
Locate your eye color on the color wheel (pictured). If you want your eye makeup to pop, then go with a color opposite of your natural eye color. If you want it to blend in, then pick coordinating shades.
