Ways to Rock a Red Lip

When it comes to signature makeup looks, few are more classic and refined than the red pout. That being said, a red lip comes in many flavors. As with any good makeup look, there are not only different ways to wear a red lip, but different ways to execute a full face application around one.

The Workday Red

Who says red lips are strictly an evening look? Rocking red lips during the day is a great way to make a bold fashion statement. The trick is to pick the right shade of red. A day red is best when worn as a sheer stain or gloss, topped off with a soft face and eye application. Keeping the face simple, and the red sheer, ensures that the look is wearable no matter what the environment.

The Evening Red

For an evening look with polish, begin by applying foundation, bronzer, and blush. Prime the eyes, and then apply a soft dusting of a sparkling, light shadow. Swipe a darker shade in the crease for contour. Finish with some mascara and a bit of liquid liner, winged out at the end. A deep shade in a matte or cream finish works best for an evening red lip. Skip the gloss with this look, as it will make the color prone to bleeding or fading.

The No-Rules Red

Makeup rules dictate that if you are wearing a bold lip, you go soft on the rest of the face. Of course, sometimes it’s fun to break the rules, and indulge in the forbidden combination of a red lip and a smoky eye. The trick here is to keep the blush light, and use a shade of eye shadow that will complement the red (a black or gray works best).

A few things to remember when selecting the shade of red that is right for you:

Not all reds are created equally. The shade you select should depend on both your skin tone and your comfort level. Warm gals should stick with orangey reds; cools gals should choose a blue red, which will also make teeth look whiter. To ensure your bold lip won’t bleed, be sure to prime and line before applying the crimson color of choice.

A great way to change any look, the red lip is a beauty trend that is always in style.

@omgitsbarbara I use the finger trick. Simply put your finger in your mouth, and drag it out. All the excess color that could cause staining disappears! This comment has been removed.

i really like the distinction between "workday", "evening" and "no-rules" reds. here's a tip: if i'm going for the matte look, i usually blot my lips with a bit of translucent powder...it' help lock in and retain the color all day! This comment has been removed.

Also when lining my lips, I fill it in a little to help blending as well as keep the color on longer. This comment has been removed.

I like the look of a red lip but it can be hard to pull off. Little tip - I usually put on a good layer of lip primer and chapstick underneath lipstick so the color lasts longer. This helps with red especially! This comment has been removed.

I wear red lipstick all the time. Love it. A great night time look but I really love the fact that you point out it is a great daytime look also. And i agree that with a soft makeup look it can be quite stunning. This comment has been removed.
