Tips for applying liquid eyeliner

Applying liquid liner can be one of makeup's messiest feats, but it's so worth the trouble since it makes your lashes look their thickest. Even if you don't have a steady hand, we've got the tricks to help you apply it with ease.

Liquid eyeliner is often used to correct the appearance of droppy eyes or to make small eyes appear larger. For the former, work liquid liner upward at the outer corners of the eye and extend it beyond the lash line. To make eyes look bigger, keep the eyelid clean (avoid dark, sooty eyeshadow) to spotlight your lashes (they'll show up more on a light background) and apply liquid liner starting from the inner corner and aiming toward the ear in winged strokes.

As a general rule, your liquid eyeliner should match your iris and be worn in a broad stroke that begins at the inner eyelid and gets thicker at the outer corner. Stroke on liquid liner while holding your eyelid with one finger, working gradually toward the center and ending at the outer corner. For total elegance, you want to layer shades of subtly smudged eyeshadow with the lightest tones on top.
