Red Queen Makeup
Tim Burtons remake of Alice in wonderland made the red Queen one of the most coveted looks this season.ADVERTISEMENT
Step 1: Try on Red Queen makeup in our virtual makeover studio.
Makeup artist Brian Bond gave us all the tips and tricks you can use to re-create the Queen of Hearts.
Step 2: Red Queen Face
Start with M.A.C. Prep + Prime Skin and then apply Make Up For Ever HD Foundation in #117 (its their fairest foundation) to your entire face, beneath your eyes, and over your lips. Set with Make Up For Ever HD Microfinishing Powder to make sure that your makeup lasts all night. If you need more coverage for your under-eye area, apply concealer on top of the HD Microfinishing Powder. To "pale down" your skin tone and lips even further, apply M.A.C. Studio Fix in Shivering White with a sponge (using a sponge to apply the M.A.C. Studio Fix gives maximum coverage).
Step 3: Red Queen Eyes
For this look you will need to disguise your eyebrows. You can purchase specialized products to cover your natural brows, but they are difficult to remove. Brian recommends a safe and easy alternative: "brush a non-toxic glue stick through the brow in the direction that the hair grows and make it smooth with an eyebrow comb. Set it with powder then repeat if you have more hair to disguise. Bond notes: "This works best for natural brows. Freshly waxed brows have a stark transition that's harder to cover."For the Red Queen's blue eye shadow, Brian used M.A.C. Pro Paint Stick in Clear Sky Blue. "The color payoff is 100% true to what it looks like; it's very opaque and very rich, giving 100% coverage." Bond explains. Note: if you plan to use an eye shadow with less than 100% coverage, you will need to prime the eye with foundation and set it with powder.
With a concealer brush and the M.A.C. Pro Clear Sky Blue Paint Stick, outline the shape for the eye shadow: draw a line from each corner of your eye, up to and past the corners of your brow. Connect the two lines with a rounded shape that mimic an eyebrow (Brian notes that drawing this "brow" shape now will save time later). The top of the eye shadow shape should be wider than your natural brows and should also lift up toward the center of your forehead.
Fill in your outlined shape with the paint stick. Use a large fluff brush to apply loose pigment (each paint stick comes with a coordinating loose pigment) over the paint stick to set it. Note: Avoid caking by working loose pigment into the brush (instead of just dipping and applying) and tap off excess pigment before you apply it to the eye.
Step 4:
To create the eyebrows, use the top of the blue shadow as a guide and trace it with a black liner. To sharpen the outside edge or clean-up, apply more of the M.A.C. Pro Studio Fix with a concealer brush.
Step 5:
For the eyeliner: Draw a nice, thin line across the top rim of your upper eyelid (from the outer corner to the inner corner) using M.A.C. Fluidline in Black Track. Use a white liner like M.A.C. Eye Kohl in Fascinating, across the bottom waterline of your eye. Brian recommends using the M.A.C. Eye Kohl because he says, "its very soft, so they go on amazingly and it will not irritate your waterline as much." Finish by setting it with your M.A.C. Pro Studio Fix.
Step 6: Red Queen Lips
Use M.A.C. Cherry Lip Liner to draw the outline of a heart on your lips. Fill in your pout with M.A.C. Longwear Lustre Lip Colour in Betwixt. "It has the consistency of a nail polish, and once it goes on, it's not coming off" says Bond.
Step 7: Red Queen Beauty Mark
To create the beauty mark, draw a spot using a liquid eyeliner like M.A.C. Liquid Last in Point Black (it's waterproof and will last all night). Use baby oil to remove it with ease.
Step 8: Extra Tips
The Red Queen Wig has a pronounced hairline, if your hairline is exposed when you put on the wig, spray your natural hair with Jerome Russell BWild Color Spray in Siberian White. This temporary color has great coverage and will last all night. Another option is to take a sponge and generously apply the M.A.C. Pro Studio Fix in Shivering White and blending it in, right on the hairline. For a Red Queen wig and costume check out CostumerSuperCenter.com.
