Makeup and Hairstyle Ideas for a Hippie Costume

Hippie Makeup Looks
It’s easy to channel your inner hippie for Halloween: find your costume simply by mixing and matching bohemian-style pieces found in boutiques right now (best of all, you can wear them later). Think wide leg jeans, platform sandals or stiletto boots, an off-the-shoulder blouse with a peasant feel and a floppy wide-brim hat. Hippies of the '60s and '70s didn't generally wear much makeup but since this is Halloween, use your imagination. Try on hippie makeup in our virtual makeup studio.

Like their Bohemian cousins, hippies are all about freedom—that means beauty freedom (no bras, flat irons or sticky styling products). Let your hair air dry, then turn a few centimeter-wide sections of hair into accent braids. Tie them with ribbons or decorate them with flowers for kicks; a feathered headband or a piece of fancy string worn Indian-style (tied around the forehead) also looks killer for Halloween.

Embrace a colorful ’60s-inspired palette when making up your face, but pair dramatic eyes with light lips. Face paint can be a lot of fun: A well-placed peace sign or heart (right under the eye, on the cheek or above the eyebrow) can make your ensemble truly memorable, as can fluttery eyelashes applied heavily to the lower part of the eye—a nod to iconic fashion model Marissa Berenson.

In terms of liner and shadow, think doe eyes and apply makeup to the outer corners only, accenting the inner corners with white shadow. Lining the inner rim of the lower lashes with a flesh-toned pencil can also create the illusion of larger eyes. –Stephanie Simons

Being hippie is all about embracing the natural side...so I would go minimal on the makeup and play up everything else (clothes, accessories, etc.) This comment has been removed.
