For a Retro Look, Go Gingham

Gingham style, not to be confused with Gangnam style, made its way to Kate Spade’s 2013 Spring Collection in the form of some seriously stylish nails. However, the print and trend itself has been around for decades. The checkered pattern delivers a retro vibe, but worn in the right way it can be more of a modern, casual look. Dresses, shirts and skirts can be found in various versions of gingham, but it’s really how you wear that will make the look unique.

A gingham dress, for example, can be updated with a chunky belt and a pair of wedges or worn with a cardigan belted at the waist and a funky pair of tights. When wearing a gingham shirt, you can mix and match with nearly anything already in your closet.

Depending on your individual style, you want to choose something that doesn’t fall into a look that is too matchy-matchy or that can be reinterpreted as retro country (unless that’s the look you’re going for!).

Gingham is a hit or miss pattern depending on how you wear it, but I think the way Kate Spade has decided to display it has dusted off the look and given it fresh life. Are you a fan of gingham?
