Ready for a hair change? Coloring your hair at home is fairly easy to do and may be just what you need for a new look. For those with pale blonde or jet black hair, I don’t suggest doing at-home coloring because it can damage your hair and more than likely will not result in the color you had hoped for. For these situations, a stylist is your best bet. But if you dare to color your own hair, then follow these four, simple tips:

Step 1: Choose a color
I recommend choosing a hair color that is only a few shades darker or a few shades lighter than your actual color, especially if it’s your first time coloring your hair. Create a makeover with the Taaz tool using a current photo. This will help you decide which color would look best on you. For at-home coloring, dark browns and reds work best for me. If you have lighter hair, brown dye can turn out black, so be aware of how harsh the results might actually be. Garnier Nutrisse is my favorite hair dye because it leaves my hair feeling soft and comes with a great smelling conditioner.
Step 2: Properly prep
Be careful not to ruin your clothing by wearing an old shirt and using old towels. Put the old towel around your neck to catch extra drips so that the dye doesn't land on your floor or carpet. It’s also a good idea to wear an old, cotton headband to keep your hair back and not dripping on your face. Make sure your hair is brushed through before applying the color and if you have long, thick hair like mine, two bottles of dye might be necessary.
Step 3: Follow the directions
There is a set of instructions that come with at-home coloring kits and should be followed. Do a patch test first. Mix the color completely. And apply the color generously, but evenly through the hair. Again, if you have thick hair, apply the color in sections; otherwise, you’ll just get the top layer. Don’t leave the color on more than the recommended time or you might end up with bright orange hair, which happened to me once upon a time.
Step 4: Take care of your hair
After you have let your hair set and then have rinsed out thoroughly, use a conditioner (but not shampoo) to keep your hair soft. Take good care of your new hair color by not subjecting it directly to the sun, dunking it a chlorinated pool or letting it dry out. If you color your hair quite frequently, then make sure you are using shampoo and conditioner products for color-treated hair. But overall, care for your care as usual with deep conditioning at least once a week.
