Hair Tips for Summer

Keep a Gorgeous, Glossy Mane Through the Summer Months

Summer is a good time to let your hair down both literally and figuratively! Say good-bye to all the products and the blow drying and really give your tresses a rest. But even if you are lower maintenance when it comes to summertime hair, it can still become easily damaged by the chlorine from pools, harsh rays of the sun and extra sweat and buildup thanks to sweltering days.

The good news is that there are some tips to keep hair in tip top shape. Specifically for me, I have long, heavy, thick hair that at times can be hard to manage. But one of the key things for summer is keeping it properly conditioned. Even for the times I don't wash my hair daily, I always make sure to condition it.

Tip #1: Really saturate the ends of your hair with conditioner while in the shower. Work it through the rest of your hair and pile it on top of your head to let it sink in. Rinse thoroughly (otherwise your hair will end up looking greasy) and then I always blast mine with cold water right before I step out of the shower. This helps to really add shine to my hair.

Also in the summer, you want to keep it protected from summer conditions such as beating down sun and heavily chlorinated pools and spas.

Tip #2: I usually cover my hair with a hat if I know I'm going to be out all day. If not, then I do alternate by using a heat protecting shampoo. Also, if I can, I try to rinse my hair immediately after getting out of the pool with cool water. I try to use a deep conditioning hair mask at least once a week. Settle in with your guilty pleasure DVR'd shows on Sunday night and pamper yourself (and your hair) a little.

Tip #3: Stay hydrated - not only for your health, but for your skin and hair. But don't FEAR the sun; soak up the vitamin D! And when it comes to your 'do, embrace beach waves, loose buns and tight braids. None of these hairstyles require a blow dryer or flat iron. Unplug the beauty tools and embrace the summertime!
