Find A Great Hair Stylist
How to spot the best hair stylist in your area
Finding the right hair stylist where you live takes a good amount of research and leg work. If you spot someone (even a stranger) who has a hair style you admire, ask them to surrender the name of the talented person who created it. Don’t be shy—women love this compliment. Acquire a handful of recommendations, then set up free consultations with potential candidates.
Do your personalities click?
Does the stylist seem overbearing and pushy, or do you feel as though he or she listens to you?
Does your potential hair stylist appear organized? How does the hair stylist present herself/himself? What you see is usually what you get.
Do the stylist’s clients emerge from the chair looking good—and satisfied?
What does her/his own hair look like? If it’s severely damaged, forget it. Why trust a person with your hair if they can’t take care of his or her own?
Did they ask questions? A good stylist should inquire about your hairstyling history, past chemical treatments, and your lifestyle to ensure that you’ll be able to maintain whatever cut they give you.
As a rule of thumb, a hair stylist who has been in the business more than three years, but not long enough to experience career “burn out” will have your best interest in mind. They’ve been working long enough to establish a loyal following of clients and have developed a style of their own (and likely still possess enthusiasm, creativity and willingness to try new styles). --Stephanie Simons
