Learn New Ways to Style Hair for Fall

Ann Yee NYFW
From the everyday to the outlandish, Fall 2012 New York Fashion Week saw many different variations of hairstyles designed to complement the clothing and overall beauty looks from some of our favorite shows. Reporting straight from the runways, here are just a few of the hair trends you can expect to see this fall.

Texture

The cooler months will see many hairstyles that go outside the realm of sleek and shiny, to edgy and textured, with unexpected shapes. Many shows utilized hot tools, such as the micro curling iron, to create curls that could be styled for maximum volume. On many occasions, hair was teased and backcombed, to create a windswept look. Whether it was plaited, pinned, or pulled back into an updo, hair had major texture.

Side Parts

Not necessarily a look in and of itself, more like a chic addition to an already executed look, the deep side part was a major force to be reckoned with this season. Offering a different vibe than its straight-down-the-middle cousin, the side part lends itself well to any look that is designed to flatter the wearer. Whether romantic and sweet, or unusually structured, side parts soften facial features and provide a certain je ne sais quoi to any look.

Variations on the Pony and Braid

A far cry from the traditional ponytails and plaits you usually see, this season’s stylists added unusual twists by adding texture, structure, and pins. At the Christian Siriano show, hair was braided at the side of the head, to effectively pull the model’s hair back, and away from the face, creating a hairstyle that spanned wide in the back. The Tracy Reese show saw ponytails lacking structure, a look which ultimately brought to mind the term “messy bedhead.” These unique styles gave a chic twist to functionality; hair was removed from the face, while still quietly complementing the look the designers were going for.
