Stores for Shopping on a Budget

Shop 'Til You Drop and Still Save

In my early 20’s I was a shopaholic. I bought clothes and bags and shoes, some of which I needed, some of which I never wore. As I learned how to budget better, I realized that I should buy only the things I really love, the things that would disappoint me if I didn’t bring home. But I do love to find a deal and here are some stores that have good ones.

Charlotte Russe/Forever 21
This is one of my favorite places to buy jewelry. The jewelry is fun, funky, trendy and best part - inexpensive! I also visit this store for boots. Pay careful attention to the style and fabric of the shoe though because not all are created equal. Last year I bought two pairs of boots for less than $20 each that I wear almost every day in the fall/winter. (You have to wait for their sales.) Even if they wear out over the next three or four years, it will have been well worth the investment.
Tip: Their online selection often has more to choose from than in store.

Ross/TJ Maxx
Stores that have designer names at discount prices are hit or miss. You have to have patience in stores like this because a lot of times the clothes are picked over, in the wrong section of sizes and in styles that might be a flash-in-the-pan trend. Don't despair! If you have an afternoon to search through the racks, then you can find a gem. Case in point: I found a beautiful, graphic-styled dress for $11!
Tip: Don't just look in your size only because the racks aren't always organized perfectly. I don't shop here as often, so I always try things on. Don't make a spontaneous purchase just because it's cheap - make sure it looks good, too.

Charming Charlie
This is like a grown up Claire’s...but better! It’s all the accessories you can imagine at an affordable price. Bags, scarves, jewelry and shoes all separated by color. How perfect is that? Average prices for jewelry and scarves are $8 and average for shoes and bags are $25.

This is one of my favorite stores to browse around. It’s a little out of my price range, but is the perfect place to find a special gift for a friend or treat yourself with something nice like a unique jacket or vintage-looking piece of jewelry. It's not exactly budget, but a very fun store.
Tip: Check out the sales rack and splurge.
