Make Sure Your Fall Wardrobe Includes a Pencil Skirt

I did a little weekend mall shopping yesterday and one thing is clear when it comes to fall fashion: pencil skirts are the way to go. There are still a few racks of the high-low skirts, short, tiered ruffle versions here and there, but everywhere I looked there were pencil skirts for sale.

It’s no surprise that pencil skirts are such a hot item right now. They’re the perfect length for fall and can easily be taken into winter with the pairing of patterned tights. The look of a pencil skirt is classy enough for work, but with the right accessories can work just as well for cocktail hour.

Pencil skirts come in various fabrics and colors and you can get a stylish one for $20 or under. A popular trend right now is the wide striped pencil skirts or ones that have both a solid and printed pattern on the same skirt. Old Navy’s pencil skirts have thick stripes in color combinations ranging from a more neutral toned black and tan as well as ones reflecting brighter shades like hot pink and gray. If you are wearing a neutral color on the bottom, don’t be afraid to add a splash of color to the top and vice versa. Target has a unique twist on the traditional pencil skirt by adding a print to one of the skirt’s panels. This adds in a trendy flair if plain black is too simple for you.

Accessories and add-ons vary depending on your own unique style and fortunately, the pencil skirt is a wardrobe staple that looks great with just about everything. Pairing with a pair of ankle boots, t-shirt and statement necklace is one of my favorite ways to wear the look, but that is just one outfit of many.

Additional pencil skirt outfit ideas include:

- crisp, white button-down shirt, animal print pumps
- sleeveless silk top, Mary Jane heels
- long, thin cardigan cinched at the waist with a skinny belt
- horizontal striped, three-quarter length shirt, ballet flats

Whatever you decide to pair with your pencil skirt, remember that it is designed to create a slim, flattering silhouette, which means you don’t want to have add-ons creating bulk to your look. Have fun mixing and matching with one of the season's most affordable staples.

I'm in need of a black pencil skirt that is fitted but not too tight! Anyone have a store recommendation? This comment has been removed.
