When you think of pleated skirts a few things probably come to mind: Cheerleaders, mousy librarians and secretaries. And maybe accordions.
Well, the pleated skirt is making a major comeback in 2012, appearing in popular designer collections and on the hips of today's hottest celebrities.
The ultra-feminine design, with little pleats creating just the right amount of volume, has been spotted on stars like Taylor Swift, Kourtney Kardashian, Kim Kardashian, Kristin Cavallari and Leighton Meester. While some have opted for just-above-the-knee cuts of the style, other have gone for more modern mini versions.
Taylor Swift, for example, looks very sweet and demure in her classic yellow and red pleated skirts. She definitely plays up the conservative side of this trend by tucking in her shirts, pulling back her hair and wearing lower heels. “Glee” star Dianna Agron followed suit with a full-length maxi version.
Kim Kardashian, on the other hand, clearly takes a cue from the Gucci handbook and styles her mini gold pleated skirt with sky-high Louboutins and chic black accessories.
It's a trend that can go from preppy to sexy in seconds, which means the pleated skirt is certainly a versatile investment. One rule to remember with this trend is to pair pleated skirts with simpler tops since the skirt already has enough volume and texture on its own.
What do you think of the pleated skirt trend for 2012? Which side of the trend are you most likely to follow: Conservative or sassy?

I like this look a lot and feel like I could wear it for school, work and out to dinner. This comment has been removed.

I think Taylor Swift's look is good, but I hate the others. The gentle pleating on the yellow(ish) skirt isn't too harsh, whereas the black and aqua one seems like you'd look like a walking kaleidoscope! This comment has been removed.

@beautydiylover It looks like it's hitched up on her waist too far though, like at school when kids make their skirts shorter than regulation allows! This comment has been removed.

I think i may be too short for these. Super cute, but it seems to compliment tall girls better, like Taylor Swift. :) This comment has been removed.

I think it's a very cute look. I don't know if I can pull it off though WITHOUT looking like a librarian. :) This comment has been removed.

Fun trend! I like Taylor Swift's length the best, and the mustard color is great too! Very classy and chic! This comment has been removed.

From the pictures, I like Kristin Cavallari's and Kourtney Kardashian's. I like the last photo where Kim paired her skirt with cropped denim jacket! I would maybe wear a look like Krisin's...super cute on her. I would have to "sass" it up a bit! Thanks for sharing this trend! This comment has been removed.
