Mall Diaries: What's Hot in Fashion

3 Fashion Trends for $20 or Less

  • feathers
  • birds
  • skirt
Two malls and six stores later, I am overwhelmed with all the trends that are on display right now. I saw florals and neons and stripes and color blocking. But, there are three that I saw in various forms, each of which can be purchased for twenty dollars are less.

I saw feathers everywhere from hats to necklaces to earrings to belts. The fun thing about feathers is that you can wear them to change your look. Depending on the color and design, you can go country chic with a feathered earrings, a cowboy hat, cutoff shorts and lace top. Or if you feel bohemian, pair a tank, maxi skirt and a long, feathered necklace. Feathers make things fun and definitely adds a little flair to an otherwise plain outfit.

Fortunately, I'm not talking about hairstyles being in style. Mullet skirts, dresses and even shirts are hot right now in stores. The "mullet" is business in the front, party in the back or interpreted to simply mean the back is longer than the front. I like seeing slim tanks with mullet skirts and sassy sandals with a mullet dress.

A fun twist for spring and summer is to "put a bird on it." Birds are showing up on blouses, necklaces and scarves. This look is sweet, eccentric and fun. A bird necklace can be your new statement piece of jewelry and a scarf with tiny birds on it can pretty much go with everything. Birds seem to be the new "print" of the season, and a cool one at that.

I used to hate mall shopping because of the crowds, but I always like to pop in to see what new trends are hitting the racks and also to see what people are wearing from season to season. These are three of MANY hot trends right now. You can find a variation for any of them for under $20 in stores like Target, Charlotte Russe, Forever 21, and H&M. You don't have to splurge to try a new trend; go ahead and try something new!
