There are casual clothes and then there are work clothes, and if you're very creative and budget savvy, you can mix the two together. Of course, there are certain items meant solely for your days off, but the plain tee can actually work to your advantage to create professional looking outfits during the week.

Step 1: Start with the Basics
H&M, Kohl's, JC Penney and other affordable stores often have t-shirts for under ten bucks. Sometimes buying in bulk can mean less expensive prices as well, so check out which stores are having sales. When you buy your t-shirt, make sure you get one that fits well, one that has a flattering neck (scoop, v-neck, boat) and buy at least one in a neutral color (gray, black, white) and one bright color (blue, yellow, teal). The point is, don't go loose and sloppy and buy a selection for more versatility.
Step 2: Pick a Trend
Do you like color blocking? Are skinny pants your style? Since the t-shirt is the base of your entire outfit, you have free reign in how you want to dress it up. Try a gray tee tucked into a colbalt blue pencil skirt. Add a pearl necklace and some classic Mary Jane heels and you have a sweet and trendy look. Or, if you are going for casual Friday style, tuck a plain black tee into a pair of skinny jeans, add a lightweight colorful scarf and a pair of funky earrings. There are hundreds of combinations that you can create around your t-shirt base while still keeping your look polished enough for work.
Step 3: Suit Up
If your work is a bit more conservative, then you can always wear a t-shirt underneath a suit jacket. For a suit, I would suggest going for a v-neck style (as you'll already be more covered up) and add a bib necklace as your statement piece. Also remember, it doesn't always have to be black and white, literally, for suits. Choose a dark gray, a striped navy blue, or go bold with color when suit jacket shopping. Depending on your company's dress code, a shorts suit or cropped pants and a jacket paired with your favorite tee are great and cooler looks for summer.
Today, I paired my v-neck dark gray t-shirt with a black pencil skirt added a pair of animal print heels and black, silver and rose gold jewelry. It's comfy, classy and totally my style. How do you dress up your plain tees?
