How to Pick Your Own Bridesmaid Dress

More and more brides are letting their wedding attendants choose their own wedding attire by assigning only a color and leaving the style up to the bride. Long gone are the long, column gowns in varying shades which cannot be worn again. However, when choosing a bridesmaid dress, it is important to keep the bride not only in mind, but informed.

Since the bride most likely will have the color chosen for you, the fun part is left up to you. Decide if you want a long or short dress and then go from there. Typically, with respect to the formality of a wedding, a longer dress is a better choice. However, if you decide against a floor-length skirt, don’t go shorter than above the knee. No matter how casual the setting, weddings are meant to be a classy affair.

Add embellishment or accessories, but go light on both. For a cocktail party, having a statement necklace or a trendy dress accent are welcome, but for a wedding, don’t be adding on so much sparkle that you outshine the bride. A crystal cuff or a pair of chandelier earrings or always a good wedding accessory. Don’t be afraid to go strapless or one shoulder either; my last wedding party dress had a one shoulder strap made out of rosettes. Beautiful.

It’s always good to make shopping for a bridesmaid dress a fun outing with the bride. That way she can give her input and suggestions. But if are you unsure as to what the bride might want, err on the conservative side and leave the dazzle to the shoes. Metallics are always a good choice to match most solid colors. Silver goes great with navy, black and purple. Gold is excellent for brown, creams, teals or blues.

When you are given the freedom to choose your own bridesmaid dress, don’t waste the opportunity to buy something you really love and something that you can potentially (even against all common expectations) wear again.

@vbeauty Haha, she is actually Type A but went more the super organized, fun bride way than the Bridezilla way. :) This comment has been removed.
