Find Out How to Get Your Closet Organized

With spring well underway, now is as good a time as ever to do a bit of spring cleaning in your closet. Say no to clutter, and yes to a closet optimized for your needs. Like any good fashionista, you want to have your things together in a way that gets you in and out of your closet in a minute flat. Here are some quick tips to get you started.

Before the organizing can start, you need to commit a few hours to going through your closet and getting rid of anything unnecessary. Have a top that you haven't worn in five years? Donate it. Have a pair of pants that are too big? Consider having them taken in. If that seems like too much effort, donate them. You want to keep your closet full of items that look good and make you feel great—otherwise, why have them take up space?

Once you’ve cleared your closet of excess items, it's time to get organized. I recommend investing in a good set of hangers, ones that are both slim and gripping. Remove all those bulky wood and plastic hangers, because they take up valuable space. As you transfer your clothing to the new hangers, separate everything into piles—tops (long sleeve, short sleeve, button downs, tanks), bottoms (skirts, pants, jeans), and dresses.

As you put your clothes back in the closet, be sure to have a clear scheme in mind. I recommend arranging by color; this will make it easier to pull together a complementary outfit in the morning. Arrange the colors in a way that makes sense to you, to ensure that your new closet goes the maximum distance.

I like to arrange my shoes on the floor of the closet in pairs, grouping like styles together. For example: dressy heels with work heels, booties with other boots, sneakers, and then flats.

When it comes to accessories, your best bet is clear, plastic organizing bins. This way, you’ll know exactly where everything is, and be able to easily grab and go on your way out the door.

Do you have any tricks to keeping a closet organized?

My sister color codes her closet and it looks great! I've never been able to get to that level of organization, but I do group things together: shirts, long-sleeves, dresses, etc. Great tips! This comment has been removed.
