When it comes to the heat of politics, sometimes I get derailed by the issues and focus on the fashion. Months leading up to the inauguration of Barack Obama as president, I started thinking...Michelle Obama has STYLE. And she has yet to disappoint since. There are things we can learn from the first lady in terms of fashion.

1. Don't be afraid to wear bold colors. She wears bright colors so well and for awhile seemed to single-handedly carry block coloring as a trend. Although her position requires her to look more conservative, she rarely looks subdued and it gets her noticed in a good way.

2. Flatter your figure. She always wears a perfect length and fit for her frame. She has been known to wear the one shoulder gowns and they look amazing with her sculpted arms. Although she is constantly in the public eye, she is not afraid to stand out with daring fashion choices.

3. Keep it simple. Her go-to outfits of cardigans and pencil skirts work on her and she has a way of switching up patterns and colors, adding a belt or a strand of pearls to keep the casual business style looking fresh and new.

4. Have fun with fashion. She put Jason Wu on the mainstream map once she wore his iconic dress to the inaugural ball. She is willing to try new designers, new trends and different shapes and designs based on the event that she is attending. Always making the trend work for her not the other way around.

I read something recently that said she was very conscious of what she wears after she caught flak for wearing shorts on a family vacation (the nerve!). From what I can tell her style is just fine. When the debates get too heavy, I turn to Michelle Obama for some first lady fashion refuge.

I know she was criticized for re-wearing some outfits, but I love the statement that she made by doing so. Her fashion is accessible and like the Everyday Woman. Most people wear the same thing more than once. If you save up for a really expensive gown, you *hope* that you can wear it to more than one event.

I see it as so sad and wasteful when someone buys something and wears it just once, without re-purposing it for a different event or donating it to someone who could wear it.

Michelle Obama is an incredible fashion icon. I love how she manages to weave inexpensive, everyday pieces into her wardrobe even though she could buy anything from any luxury designer in the world. She's so genuine. Like a modern-day Jackie O. This comment has been removed.
