Go Behind the Scenes and Experience What It Is Like to Attend Fashion Week in New York

Fashion Week New York
Girls, it’s officially September! For this beauty blogger, that can only mean one thing: Spring 2012 New York Fashion Week is finally here. I will be spending the next week running around the tents at Lincoln Center, capturing all of the action. What does that mean for you? It means a sneak preview of the hottest styles, trends, and products that we can look forward to seeing next spring. Exciting, right?

As we all warm up to the idea that summer is officially ending, New York Fashion Week has us jumping ahead to the hottest looks for the next major season: spring. The beauty teams working backstage at every show strive to capture a designer’s vision, while simultaneously exhibiting the wonderful styles, products, and color palettes that will be on everyone’s must-have list early next year. Attending fashion week is essentially like gazing into beauty and fashion’s magic crystal ball.

For me, the fashion week process begins with invitations to go backstage with some of my favorite brands, like MAC, CND, and TIGI. Schedule ready, I mentally prepare myself for the insanity that fashion week will bring—specifically, juggling my love for beauty and fashion with the commitments of a full-time job. My fashion week coverage begins when my work day ends, and I ensure that everything goes off without a hitch by adhering to a strict, tightly bound schedule. Also helpful is the fact that most of the shows I attend are at the Lincoln Center location (as opposed to off-sites throughout the city and the shows at MILK studios), so the journey from work is a short walk.

Procedure dictates that I enter the backstage area approximately an hour and a half before the show is scheduled to begin. Camera, notebook, and handycam at the ready, I interview the leads for the hair, makeup, and nail teams, and proceed to snap shots of the models amidst all of the frenetic action. When you’re backstage, time is of the essence. I strive to cover all that I possibly can in the span of half an hour, so that I can get out of the way of models, the prep teams, and my fellow editors and journalists. Material in hand, it is off to the next show, until that day’s scheduled coverage is done, usually around 9 pm. I head home—thoroughly exhausted—and proceed to edit all of my material, so I can share it with readers as quickly as possible.

I enter each backstage experience as if embarking on a new adventure. Especially exciting for me is my ability to gaze upon all of the different products that brands will roll out in the coming months. Samples, prototypes, new shades, and even new formulas always make their way into the tents backstage—the ultimate testing arena. Not always obvious, it takes a keen eye to recognize these new products as the artist talks about the beauty look in great detail. While the urge to play with the aforementioned products is strong, there is an unspoken “look but don’t touch” policy in effect. Trust me when I say that I do plenty of looking.

Stay tuned for your exclusive sneak peek into New York Fashion Week, behind the tents!
