Updating a wardrobe doesn’t have to mean a complete overhaul. It simply means that you can choose some basic pieces and build around them. Some style basics should include: a favorite pair of jeans, a classic black tee, a printed dress, a blazer and a great pair of shoes. By beginning with these key pieces it’s easy to dress them up or down to change from day to night while also experimenting with layers to be added as the weather changes.

A casual day outfit of jeans and a tee can quickly turn into an outfit suitable for dinner and drinks; adding a fitted blazer or different accessories can change a look immediately. The key to creating a unique style is to start with simple pieces but adding your own flair and fashion spin to make the outfit yours with chosen pieces that fit your personality.

Marketplace websites like Etsy are fun to browse for handmade and vintage pieces for wardrobe additions. There are a bunch of categories to choose from on Etsy including clothing, accessories and handbags. It’s a place you can also post your own creations whether that might be jewelry, belts or scarves (or whatever you’re good at making). Pieces and prices vary so you can pick and choose different items to incorporate into your wardrobe basics. Often times it only takes one key piece to really pull an outfit together and make every day feel like your own personal fashion show.

The Los Angeles Fashion District is also a good place to find fashion inspiration. There are fabric samples spilling out of the shop doors for blocks. There are stores dedicated specifically to jewelry carrying many local designers and then there is the bazaar-like atmosphere that is the shopping mecca known as Santee Alley. Navigating the Fashion District is a daytime adventure that can lead you to some original pieces to keep update your style.

Because trends come and go, it’s best to keep those pieces you feel most comfortable with in your wardrobe. However, incorporating new styles can rejuvenate your closet without having to spend a ton of money. Accessories and creativity are two of the easiest ways to make an outfit feel new so buying an at-home tie dye kit or learning how to crochet or making your own jewelry can make the wardrobe makeover be a fun learning experience as well as fashionable.

Finally, there are several vintage and consignment stores in the Los Angeles areas to browse so before shopping for new threads cleaning out old ones can turn into cash or trade-ins which means less cost for you!

Another fun way to get some new pieces is to have a style swap with friends. Have all of your friends clean out their closets for items they no longer wear but don’t just want to throw away, set up tables and racks to display items, mix a few cocktails to serve and have a clothing exchange party.

The truth is when we think we have nothing left to wear there are always imaginative ways to reinvent an old outfit or add in something new to our closets that keeps our style our own but doesn’t break our piggy banks while doing so.

I like the idea of a clothing exchange party as well and I'm sure husband would like the idea of me cleaning out the closet! ;) This comment has been removed.

Clothing exchange parties are the best! I try to throw one every 6 months or so! Great excuse for cocktails, and any items left go to the Salvation Army. This comment has been removed.
