Coat Alternatives: 3 Cute Cover-Ups to Try This Fall

A few weeks ago, I had written about choices for coats this winter, but sometimes cooler weather doesn’t necessarily call for a full-on coat. There are a lot of options for cover-ups that are a great choice if a coat isn’t something you need to add to your wardrobe.

Cape. I’ve been wanting a cape since last fall and can’t let another season pass without one. I think they are a fun look and have a whimsical feel. Capelets are a pretty option to pair with cocktail dresses, but if you’re looking for a cape make sure it’s the right length and style to keep you from looking like Little Red Riding Hood. Pair with slim fit jeans or leggings and boots. Bulkier clothing or too much layering can make the look appear too heavy.

Ruana Wrap. A ruana wrap is part cape, part vest and can be worn several ways. You can belt the look and look polished. You can pin part of it with a brooch for a boho flair or just drape the ruana for a fabulous statement. A ruana wrap is also a perfect piece for traveling because it can double as a blanket in addition to being stylish and creating warmth.

Oversized cardigan. This is one of my favorite cover-ups. I love an oversized cardigan and own several pairs because they can be worn with anything. Cardigans are cozy and stylish and look fantastic on everyone. Dark colors or classic black fit into any wardrobe. Neutral hues or neon shades can also work well. Choose a fit that's loose at the bottom or a more tailored look and then pair it with everything from leggings to pencil skirts to a belted dress.
