Why is my periods so screwed up because of my birth conteol, or something else?

asked
After my son was born I had normal periods, actually better then what I previously had. When I started seeing someone I started taking birth control, after about months of taking it my periods were so screwed up so i went to the drs. He said the birth control I was on wasn't strong enough so he put me on a different kind. Every since I've been on this birth control my periods have been even worse. This time I am 2 months late for my period and have taken 4 pregnancy tests (one was blood work, done by dr) and all were negative, over the last week and ahalf I have been spotting after I take the pill after after sex, within the last 3 dats I have stopped taking it and now have started one of the worse periods I have ever had.

It's a pretty safe bet that the pills are making your cycles go crazy. Birth control pills are supposed to reduce your periods! It is normal for someone on the pill to get only 4 periods a year. The pills contain hormones that ultimately prevents the ova from leaving the ovaries, which prevents sperm from fertilizing the egg and causing pregnancies. Because eggs are not traveling to your uterus as much, you will have less periods.

If you're taking birth control pills and regularly have sex, do not stop taking the pills, as that defeats the purpose. As long as your doctor says your body is not experiencing side effects from the pills, keep taking it.
