I think side bangs are a good idea but because you describe your hair as thick, I wouldn't get it cut too short. Maybe shorter face framing layers and the just past your shoulders.

If your goal is to make it appear thicker than it already is, then a bob would definitely be a good option for you! I would let the front sides be a little longer than the back, while the nape lays stacked. This will really help to create added volume while still laying in a flattering manner. A side bang would be more suiting on you than a full fringe as this may overwhelm your face. Last but not least, to conserve the majority of your thickness, I would stick to longer layers. Going too short with your layers will reduce the amount of volume and fullness you get out of your style.

I think a shoulder length bob would be cute on you. Try a deep side bang like the picture of Jessica below. You could also opt for a "choppy" bob by adding more layers to the style below.

I would go with a bob & ask your hair dresser to do some undercutting-so it won't be too puffy or consider a cut like the one in the middle:
