How do you make a messy ponytail?
asked
I was wondering how people create the messy, backcombed look with a ponytail? I have got medium length hair, too... so its harder and I cant afford hair extensions! :)

Backcomb lots of your hair to add volume and messiness to your ponytail. I don't have good experiences with backcombing because it really hurts me, but you should have better luck!

I like to use styling mousse for high, messy ponies like this one and tease a little at the crown.

Its easy. you just put your hair in a really high ponytail and the backcomb all of your hair. Put a ton of hairspary on and ta daa. You have a perfect backcombed pony

You could always just pin it back and then tease the hair up front like Blake has it. Also, use gel so your hair stays pinned back.

No extentions needed! Back combing would help to give this style a good foundation as well as day old hair since freshly washed will be too slippery smooth to hold the style. Once the ponytail holder is secure pull out a tad toward ends then tighten splittling the length into 2 sections. Repeat these steps a couple times until target volume and body are reached. You can even run your fingertips into the bang area and pull out slightly while the ponytail is loose. Secure by splitting ends in 2 and tightnening into place. A soft working hairspray will hold this style well without creating stiffness, and flaking. Big sexy hair makes my favorite called soy touchable. Its made of soy so will give you flexible hols without all the extras.

I'll usually just scrunch my hair with some mousse before putting it up in a ponytail. Once it's up, touch up with some light hairspray.

1.Collect your hair piece by piece where you want your ponytail to be without combing your fingers through the hair. This will make the overall ponytail while letting strands overlap and pieces of hair fall here and there.
2. Make a loose ponytail, then tighten it at the scrunchie by pulling strands apart and away from each other. This will make a lot of volume and bumps, but look perfectly messy.
